Another week, another ‘top 5’ list! This time we’re breaking away from the norm and exploring the world of cottages… specifically the most luxurious holiday properties to rent for large groups. Perhaps you’re looking to take the extended family away, or perhaps have a yuppie escape with friends? Whatever type of break you’re after, we’ve scoured the internet for the most elegant and luxurious self catering properties around! So without further ado…

Harthill Barn, near Bakwell, The Peak District

Coming in at number five on our list is the stunning Harthill Barn. Nestled in the Peak District just 3 and a half miles from Bakewell, this converted barn is situated in 14 acres of grounds on the Harthill Hall estate.

Inside, there is a host of original features including mullioned windows, flagstone floors and oak beams. In terms of bedrooms there are six luxurious double rooms, five of which have additional smaller beds which are ideal for children.

Speaking of children, the amenities at Harthill Hall are sure to keep younger members of the party entertained. There is an indoor heated pool (with one hour of private use a day), a children’s play area, as well as a shared games room boasting snooker, air hockey and billiards.

As an added extra, the property includes tickets to Chatsworth House for mid-week stays of four nights.

If you’re looking for a traditional British holiday experience then this may be the cottage for you! Set in a stunning position with uninterrupted views of the sea, Cliff Lodge is only half a mile from the nearest beach and the nearest Michelin starred restaurant is just a 5 minute stroll away.

In terms of the property itself, there is a living room with flatscreen TV, a balcony with sea views, a dining room with seating for 12, as well 6 luxurious bedrooms… one of which even has its own balcony with ocean views!

In terms of amenities, the property offers an indoor heating pool, a games room, table tennis, sauna and a 8 seater hot tub on the decking. There is also a good sized garden with a patio, terrace and garden furniture for dining alfresco.

Ellingham Hall, near Alnwick, Northumberland

In at number three is Ellingham Hall, the largest of the five cottages and sleeping up to a massive 31 people! It is set in a great position for exploring both the rolling hills and stunning coastline of Northumberland, and perhaps most importantly is only 600 meters away from the nearest pub!

With a history dating back to the early 1700’s, the building itself is full of elegant features such as high ceilings, a beamed entrance hall and a large mantle fireplace. The seventeen well appointed bedrooms include one four poster and one ‘tower room’ with fantastic views.

In the evening, guests can relax in the hot tub or dine alfresco in the lawned garden. For special occasions (and with prior arrangement), catering and entertainment can be organised.

Hall Farm, Kings Lynn, Norfolk

Moving down the east coast and into the lovely Norfolk countryside brings us to number two on our list; Hall Farm. This is an imposing 18th century, grade II listed former farmhouse that has been lovingly renovated to provide luxury accommodation.

Features include an indoor heated pool, sauna, and outdoor spa tub. For children there is a games room with table tennis and table football, as well as a large lawned garden to play on.

Inside, the property benefits from a reading room and living room (both with open fires), nine bedrooms (a mix of twins and doubles), as well as a well appointed kitchen area.

Hall Farm is a great choice of venue for those living in London, as the nearby town of Downham Market has a train link to London which only takes an hour and twenty minutes.

Lea Hall, Matlock, Derbyshire

Coming back full circle to Derbyshire and at number one we have Lea Hall near Matlock. This fantastic grade II listed property has been carefully restored to its former glory and offers those little extras such as bathrobes and luxury toiletries. It’s like being the lord of your own manor!

There is a drawing room with crystal chandelier (we wouldn’t expect any less!), a 17th century dining hall with open fire and seating for 20 people, as well as some modern luxuries such as a flatscreen TV and a games room.

In the summer, guests can enjoy a barbeque and dine alfresco in the large 4 acre gardens. And it’s okay if the children finish early as there is a miniature tennis court to keep them occupied!

This really is a fantastic venue for a family gathering or large group of friends and with the Peak District and Chatsworth House nearby, there should be enough to keep everybody busy.
